US Shippers Driven to Seek Greater LTL Visibility
The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of digitalizing supply chains to enhance visibility and empower business leaders to make informed decisions with real-time analytics. At the beginning of the pandemic, organizations across many industries experienced supply chain disruptions that compelled business leaders to re-evaluate their supply chain strategies. For companies that rely on LTL shipping to transport their goods, the COVID-19 pandemic accentuated the need for visibility through their LTL networks, digitalization of their shipping operations, and contactless pickup and delivery capabilities.
In this new article in the Journal of Commerce, Russ Felker, GlobalTranz’s CTO, and industry experts, including Brian Thompson, chief commercial officer at SMC3, and leading LTL providers discuss how LTL carriers are meeting the demand from shippers to increase visibility and offer contactless pickup and delivery. “Shippers, carriers, and 3PLs need standards for digital forms, such as the bill of lading and invoices,” commented Felker. “One of the big issues with digital BOLs is that there’s no standard. Individual carriers have their own digital BOL formats.” To overcome this obstacle, an LTL Digital Council was formed to develop BOL standards that benefit both carriers and shippers.
Equally important to visibility and cost reduction is the need to drive consistent service. Felker added, “Shippers will come to us and say, ‘It’s great if you can save me a few dollars but what I really need is to get this thing there on time, in good shape, and I need to be able to do this consistently.’ The value is in establishing consistent service. Late deliveries can cost much more than costs saved.”
