Winter Storms

Coast to Coast Winter Storm Update Tuesday, January 26th at 1500 (CST)

 

Many highways and interstates throughout the west coast are closed due to snow and ice. The following major roads are closed:

  • I-5 in Southern California at the Grapevine
  • I-15 between Southern California and Nevada
  • Highway 58 in Southern California

Additionally, the following highways and interstates are not allowing any triple-trailer trucks:

  • All highways in Nevada
  • I-84 and I-5 in Oregon

The following LTL Carriers have announced embargoes and terminal status updates:

 

Old Dominion Freight Lines:

  • Cedar Rapids, IA: Terminal CDR under limited operations with expected service delays
  • Chicago, IL: Terminal CHI is operating with slight service delays in select service areas
  • La Salle, IL: Terminal LSI is operating with moderate service delays
  • Rockford, IL: Terminal RFI is operating with slight service delays in select service areas
  • Rock Island, IL: Terminal RKI is operating with moderate service delays

YRC Freight:

  • Kearney, NE: Terminal 863 is closed
  • Omaha, NE: Terminal 381 is operating under limited operations
  • Rock Island, IL: Terminal 371 is operating under limited operations
  • Wheeling, IL: Terminal 303 is operating under limited operations
  • Des Moines, IA: Terminal 375 is operating under limited operations
  • Madison, WI: Terminal 394 is operating under limited operations
  • Oak Creek, WI: Terminal 313 is operating under limited operations

CNN is reporting 23 states, spanning from the West Coast to the Midwest, have issued winter weather alerts due to the impact of two storm systems:

  • More than 40 million residents across the Midwest and West Coast region are under a Winter Weather Alert.
  • Over 20 Million West Coast residents are under a Wind Threat Alert.
  • Approximately 6.8 million residents across the West Coast and Midwest are under extreme cold alert.

Snow accumulation from these storm systems will range between 3-20 inches across the West Coast and Midwest. Carriers should prepare for adverse driving conditions across these regions throughout the week.

West Coast Region

Shippers should expect significant delays in freight flows and supply chains throughout the West Coast Region due to significant mountain snowfall, according to FreightWaves. The first storm system will begin to produce snowfall in the region on Monday, January 25th, and continue into the evening of Tuesday, January 26th.

On Wednesday, January 27th, a second storm system will hit this region and continue through Friday, January 29th. Due to high winds, FreightWaves predicts whiteout conditions will be prevalent throughout the area. These two storms may produce up to 6 feet of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued the following warnings for the West Coast Region:

  • The Riverside County Mountains, CA, area is under a Winter Storm Warning until 10 PM (PST) Monday, January 25th. This storm may produce up to 3-6 inches of snow above 4000 feet and 6-12 inches of snow above 5000 feet, with the potential of 18 inches of snow in isolated areas.
  • San Bernardino County Mountains, CA, is under a Winter Storm Warning until 10 PM (PST) Monday, January 25th. This snow may produce 3-6 inches of snow in areas above 4000 feet and 6-12 inches of snow in areas above 5000 feet. There is the potential for 18 inches of snow in isolated areas.
  • San Diego County Mountains, CA, is under Winter Storm Warnings until 10 PM (PST) Monday, January 25th. This storm may produce 5-9 inches of snow, with localized amounts up to 20 inches predicted.
  • Los Angeles County Mountains, CA, is under a Winter Storm Warning until 10 PM (PST) January 25th. 4-8 inches is predicted to accumulate, and the region will see wind gusts up to 65 MPH.
  • Flagstaff, AZ, Prescott, AZ, Happy Jack, AZ, are under Winter Storm Warnings until 11 AM (MST) Tuesday, January 26th. These areas will see snow accumulations of 6-25 inches and wind gusts as high as 40 MPH.
  • Reno, NV, is under a Winter Storm Warning until 4 AM (PST) Friday, January 29th. The region may see 6-12 inches of snow, with 10-20 inches expected west of Highway 395.
  • Southwest Mountains, NM, is under Winter Storm Warning until 5 PM (MST) Tuesday, January 26th. The area can expect 3-6 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts above 8000 feet.
  • The following regions in UT are under Winter Storm Warning until 11 AM (MST) Tuesday, January 26th:
    • Southern Mountains
    • Dixie
    • Zion National Park region
    • South Central

Mid-West Region

A winter storm system is predicted to produce as much as 12 inches of snowfall in some parts of the Midwest, beginning on the evening of Monday, January 25th. This storm system will impact the following interstate highways:

  • I-29
  • I-35
  • I-70
  • I-75
  • I-80
  • I-81
  • I-90

The National Weather Service has issued the following warnings for the Mid-West Region:

  • Most of IA is under a Winter Storm Warning until 6 AM (CST) Tuesday, January 26th, including De Moines, Ames, Perry, Waukee, Adel, Newton, Grinnell, Marshalltown, Tama, Toledo, Traer, Dysart, and Gladbrook. The region can expect snow accumulation of 6-10 inches and wind gusts as high as 35 MPH.
  • Winter Storm Warning is in effect until noon (CST) Tuesday, January 26th for central IL. Total snow accumulations of 4-6 inches are predicted for the region.
  • Chicago, IL, is under a winter storm warning until 5 PM (CST) Tuesday, January 26th, with predicted snow accumulations of 5-8 inches and Northeast Wind gusts as high as 35- 40 MPH.
  • Parts of KS are under Winter Storm Warning until Midnight (CST) Monday, January 25th, with predicted snow accumulation of 5-10 inches.
  • Portions of northeast and north-central KS and northeast and northwest MO are under winter storm warning until 6 AM (CST) Tuesday, January 26th, with 2-10 inches of snow and ice accumulation predicted for the region.
