A new winter storm system will impact the South-Central U.S. beginning Wednesday, February 17th, and continue on a similar path as last week’s historic storm. Due to this system, over 100 million Americans are under winter storm warnings, watches, and advisories until Friday, February 19th.
According to the National Weather Service, winter storms from the Southern Plains to the East Coast will produce heavy snow and treacherous ice accumulations from the South-Central U.S. to Mid-Atlantic:.
- A potent upper-level trough tracking into the Southern Plains is responsible for areas of snow and freezing rain enveloping much of the South-Central U.S.
- As this trough advances East, the shield of snowfall will extend from Arkansas and the Mid-South to the central Appalachians, with accumulations of 3 to 6 inches likely.
- 8 inches of snow is possible in parts of south-central Arkansas.
- On Wednesday evening, significant ice accumulations are expected from East Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley to Virginia and North Carolina Piedmont.
- Ice accumulations of a quarter to a half-inch are forecast in East Texas, northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and western Mississippi, with crippling totals over a half-inch also possible. Residents in these areas can expect dangerous travel conditions, power outages, and extensive tree damage.
- Periods of moderate-to-heavy snow will break out across the northern Mid-Atlantic Thursday, with some locations switching over to sleet and freezing rain.
- Starting Thursday afternoon, heavy snow will blanket southern New England. The region can expect treacherous travel conditions and travel delays.
- Temperatures are expected to remain 20 to 35 degrees below average throughout the Plains, Mississippi Valley, and lower Great Lakes.
- Beginning Wednesday and throughout Thursday, parts of the Great Plains will experience morning lows in the single digits or possibly below zero.
- Bitterly cold temperatures will push into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast ahead of the impending winter storm that arrives Thursday morning.
